There is no single studio sofa size. Studios with the same square footage can have very different usable walls and door positions. Start with the actual seating zone, then test a compact sofa’s full footprint and delivery route.
Enter your measurements in the calculator ↗Worked example: a 9 × 8-foot seating zone
Suppose the seating area has a clear 108-inch wall and extends 96 inches toward the bed zone. A 72 × 34-inch sofa leaves 36 inches along the wall, or 18 inches at each end if centered. Those end margins do not prove that the route to the bathroom is clear.
Add an 18-inch gap and a 20-inch-deep coffee table: 34 + 18 + 20 = 72 inches. Only 24 inches remains toward the bed zone. That misses this calculator’s 30-inch planning path. Without the table, the sofa leaves 62 inches before other furniture. Test a smaller movable table or a different arrangement on the floor.
Check the studio in both modes
- Everyday use: walk from the entrance to the bed, bathroom and kitchen with chairs pulled out.
- Guest use: mark the sofa bed’s full open length and width using the manufacturer’s dimensions. Check whether the main route still works.
- Storage access: open drawers and lift-up seats fully. Include the space needed to stand and operate them.
Enter the seating zone, not the full apartment, in the calculator. For a movable layout, compare it in the room scale planner and read the sleeper sofa guide.

Room placement and delivery are separate checks. Confirm the route with the seller when it is tight.
