The short answer

Measure both the clear elevator doorway and the usable interior. A sofa may fit inside the cabin yet fail at the entrance, or clear the door but leave too little room to rotate.

Measure two separate openings

With the elevator door fully open, record clear width and height, allowing for the door track and protective padding. Inside, measure usable width, depth and height after handrails or wall protection. Note where the doors open and whether a long piece can be placed diagonally without damaging the cabin.

Include the approach

Measure the building entrance, hallway to the elevator, space directly opposite the elevator doors, and the hall from the elevator to your room. A turn before the elevator can be tighter than the cabin.

Ask the building and seller

Confirm whether a freight elevator must be reserved, whether wall pads are required, and any delivery hours or insurance paperwork. Give the delivery team the largest rigid and packaged piece dimensions plus photos of the door and cabin. They must judge the actual handling route.

Keep a record

Use the measurement checklist to record each point. An elevator’s posted weight rating does not establish dimensional fit.

Check your own measurements

Room placement and delivery are separate checks. Confirm the route with the seller when it is tight.
