The short answer

The most missed numbers are clear door width, the space after a turn, stair landings, elevator openings and the largest delivered piece. Record all five before ordering.

1. Clear door width

Measure with the door open, including the obstruction from the door leaf and hardware.

2. Building entrance

An apartment’s front door is not necessarily the narrowest entrance.

3. Hallway turn

Record both hallway widths and the distance to the opposite wall.

4. Stair landing

The platform where furniture pivots may be tighter than the stairs.

5. Overhead clearance

Low ceilings, lights, sprinklers, and beams limit tilting.

6. Elevator door

The opening can be narrower than the elevator cabin.

7. Elevator interior

Measure width, depth, and height; note rails and wall protection.

8. Packaged dimensions

The box may be larger than the assembled product, or delivery may require it boxed.

9. Individual module size

For a sectional, the largest section determines the tightest fit.

10. Working space in the room

Leave room to assemble, open drawers, extend a sleeper, and walk past it.
